Northeast Iowa Agency on Aging (NEI3A) is seeking volunteers to help distribute food to the area’s elderly population.
“We are experiencing volunteers not wanting to deliver at this time due to the fears surrounding COVID-19,” NEI3A CEO Donna Harvey said in an article by the Bellevue Herald-Leader. “We are looking for anyone who is willing to assist us in getting these critical meals to homebound individuals.”
In addition to providing home-delivered meals throughout Northeast Iowa, the nonprofit corporation has daily meals available at its onsite locations. NEI3A serves the counties of Allamakee, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Chickasaw, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Grundy, Hardin, Howard, Jackson, Marshall, Poweshiek, Tama and Winneshiek.
“With the population we serve, it is critical to continue offering services, particularly a hot, nutritious meal to help keep them as healthy as possible,” Harvey said. “We are currently calling every person we serve throughout our 18 county service area to assess their nutrition needs, and to help come with a contingency plan to get them food, should the need arise.”
There have been 68 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Iowa, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health. Nationwide there have been more than 15,000 confirmed cases.
