The Black Hawk County COVID-19 Cooperative Disaster Response Fund is granting the Northeast Iowa Food Bank $50,000 as they continue to meet the needs of the community.
KWWL reports this is the first grant the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa has made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This grant will be used to match gifts to support the food bank's work in Black Hawk County.
Donations to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank COVID-19 Emergency Preparedness Fund will be matched dollar for dollar up to $50,000 to help the organization continue to serve the needs of the community during the pandemic.
Nearly 75% of the food bank's usual supply comes from donated groceries, but since people are staying home to slow the spread of coronavirus, they are anticipating that grocery donations will fall. There will be significant costs to continue operating. The food bank has also seen a decrease in the number of people who show up to volunteer.
As fundraising continues throughout the pandemic, funds will be released on a rolling basis, making it easier to adapt to the ongoing needs of the community.
