The Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club openly expressed its opposition to a Clayton County company’s request to ship water to parched western states.

Limestone and silica sand producer Pattison Sand Co. has appealed a decision made by the state’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to decline the business' request to extract and ship water from the Jordan Aquifer, the Telegraph Herald reported.

The DNR thrice denied a permit to Pattison Sand. An appeal hearing is scheduled for next month.

Sierra Club Legal Chair Wally Taylor said his organization backs the DNR.

“We filed an intervention just to add support to the DNR’s position,” Taylor told the Telegraph Herald. “We want to make sure all issues are presented.”

The publication reported that the DNR refused Pattison Sand a permit because the applicant failed to specify how and where the water would be used.
