This is the third Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture of the 2021-22 series, Decolonizing Paideia? Revising the Products and Processes of Education. Lectures take place at 7:00pm in the CFL Recital Hall.
Music theory has traditionally been viewed as a neutral discipline where musical sounds are considered as “pure” sonic events, and though composer biographies occasionally seep into classroom discussions, this is a space where students can simply study “the music itself.”
But what if those seemingly innocent scales, chords, and key signatures were found to rest upon a tradition that was anything but neutral?
This discussion will investigate the methods and materials we use to teach music theory and suggest alternatives that bring us closer to a more honest, holistic approach to studying music.
Brooke Joyce’s music has been described as “vividly pictorial” (San Francisco Chronicle) and “exceptionally gripping” (Los Angeles Times) and has been performed by soloists and ensembles around the world, including the Indianapolis Symphony, the Cincinnati Symphony, the Brentano Quartet, the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, and tenor James Gilchrist.
Brooke is the Composer-in-Residence at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, past chair of the Iowa Composers Forum, and a founding faculty member of the International Music Festival of the Adriatic
