Each year a group of dedicated individuals gather together weekly in Ossian, IA between October and June to sew over 100 quilts for others to enjoy. It originated as a group of Red Cross volunteers that came together during WWII to roll bandages. As the years passed they began making quilts for others instead. It continues today as daughters or other relatives, friends, and community members take a members place.
They meet every Thursday afternoon for those nine months and produce up to 8 quilts per day – and then they take summer vacation. “It was enlightening to see the process for completing a quilt,” shares Holly Kanengieter, WMC Foundation Coordinator. “Nothing goes to waste! Each year they apply for a Depot grant to purchase the quilt batting, otherwise all other materials are donated or acquired as closets containing yarn and fabric are cleaned out.”
The main goal of the group is to complete a giving product for someone to use that needs extra comfort or warmth. Winneshiek Medical Center Foundation was fortunate to be a recipient for patients in hospice and the emergency room.
