Norse Defeat Pipers 64-63 In Home Opener

3

Luther College issued the following announcement on Nov. 13.

The men's basketball team posted its first win of the season defeating Hamline University (MN) 64-63 tonight in the Regents Center Gym. Luther led the majority of this ballgame but had to hold off a late Piper run to secure the victory.

Down 57-51 with a little over six minutes left on the clock, the Pipers put together a 9-2 run and took the lead 60-59, thanks to a Cooper Berg three-point bucket with 4:33 remaining. The Norse responded with a layup by Mat Rohden and the three-pointer by Andrew Lazinbat for a 64-60 advantage. Cooper knocked down another trey at 1:35 that proved to be the final points of the evening. Following the miss on the front end of a one-and-one for the Norse, Piper point guard Tait Nelson had one more opportunity for the win but came up short as time expired.

Matthew Franzen led the Norse with 13 points. Aidan Bailey was next with 12, followed by Ben Gill with 9 and Eros Carpio with 8. Luther's bench outscored Hamline 32-2 and the Norse also won the battle of the boards 38-30.

Hamline was led Nelson who poured in a game high 19 points. Cooper produced a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Chasen Livingston also reached double digits with 12.

The win gives Luther an overall record of 1-2. Hamline fell to 0-2.

Luther returns to action at home on Friday, Nov. 19 when it will host Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) at 6:00 p.m.
